On August 29th, 2005, America experienced its worst natural disaster in history. Chapel on the Hill members wanted to help - so an offering was taken. This time, though, that didn't seem to be enough.
Through the oversight of Associate Pastor Bill Breckenridge, Chapel has sponsored several missions trips to the Mississippi Gulf region. In the beginning, Pastor Bill went with another church under the auspices of Samaritan's Purse, for its first relief trip to New Orleans in early October 2005. A week later, Pastor Bill and seven Chapel men drove down to the heart of the devastated area, helping a church and community that was destroyed by a 42 foot storm surge. What they saw and did is chronicled on the Chapel blog, "Chapelccino."
Chapel on the Hill sent down truckloads of food, and then participated in a massive Christmas gift project. In January of 2006, Pastor Bill and seven men again drove to Mississippi, building sheds for those now living in FEMA trailers. In early March, Chapel sent down Pastor Bill and Donna-Jean to view the region and plan for a women's trip, which took place in April. Six Chapel women painted, moved debris, cleaned out flood-damaged houses, and helped in any way they could.
Another men's trip took place November 8th-14th, and this time nine Chapel men laid the foundation for a brand new home for one woman displaced by the hurricane. That home is now ready for her to moving into, after she had lived in a FEMA trailer all this time, and we praise God our men could be a vital part of starting her new life.
Our missions trips continue. At present, a men's summer trip is being considered for the Yukon, Canada, to insulate and re-roof Faro Bible Chapel. Pray for God's leading and provision for this trip.
"As we have, therefore, opportunity, let us do good unto all men,
especially unto those who are of the household of faith."
